CAPITAL TRANSIT: Washington’s Street Cars: The Final Era: 1933-1962
by Peter C. Kohler | |||
Recalling the heyday of Washington as a Street Car Capital, Capital Transit is a comprehensive history of the Capital Transit and D.C. Transit era. From the merger of Capital Traction Co. and Washington Railway & Electric in 1933 to form Capital Transit, the transformation of the system into the most modern in the Nation, the apogee of the street railway as Washington went to war and the long decline of the late 1950s culminating in that cold, sad January day in 1962 when the last car entered Navy Yard Car House, Capital Transit is a nostalgic look back at a Washington that vanished with "the cars."
