Ride a Bike to the Trolley Museum!

The Museum is near the northeast terminus of the Matthew Henson Trail. The Matthew Henson Trail originates at Rock Creek Trail in Winding Creek Park, crosses Veirs Mill Road, Connecticut and Georgia Avenues before reaching Layhill Road (3.6 miles from Winding Creek Park). There is a parking area on Layhill Road. The end of the trail is 0.8 miles east of this point.

To get to the museum from Alderton Road, turn left on Alderton Road for about 0.5 mile, then right on Bonifant and proceed about 0.3 mile to the Museum Driveway (just beyond ICC construction). The Visitor Center is up the steep hill, 0.25 mile.

Except during rush hour, cyclists can take their wheels onto Metrorail and on Ride On buses. For Metro riders, there are bike lanes on Layhill Road between the Glenmont Station and the Matt Henson Trail (about 1.1 miles).

Public Transportation

Access to the Museum by public transportation can bring you within about a mile. However, once leaving the Ride On bus, you will walk along Bonifant Road, a busy 2 lane road without sidewalks for most of the distance and with narrow shoulders.

If you are a cyclist, you can follow bicycle lanes north from Glenmont station along Layhill Road to the Matt Henson Trail or to Bonifant Road, or ride from the bus stop at Layhill Road and Bonifant to the Museum.

Metrorail (Metro)

The Metro station closest to the Museum is Glenmont, the northeast terminus of the Red Line. From there, it is about 3.5 miles to the Museum.

Ride On Bus

The Montgomery County Ride On Bus #26 originates at Glenmont Station (destination: Montgomery Mall) at 30 minute intervals during the times when the Museum is open. Within about 5 minutes, it stops at the corner of Layhill Road and Bel-Pre Road/Bonifant Road. From this stop, you would walk east away from the commercial area. Note that most of the way has no sidwalks and sometimes the shoulders are quite narrow. It is about 0.9 mile to the Museum entrance, then about .25 mile uphill to the Museum. The #26 bus also serves the White Flint and Twinbrook stations, all on the Red Line.
