EDUCATION ASSISTANT

Description
  • Assists Museum staff in the presentation of educational programs to children.
Requirements
  • Enjoys interacting with children.
  • Is able to successfully instruct children in an age appropriate manner.
  • Possesses the talent and dexterity necessary to help in the design and production of teaching aids.
  • Wears appropriate clothing [white shirt/blouse and navy blue or black pants/skirt].
  • Follows all health and safety regulations.
Volunteer Times
  • Thursdays and/or Fridays
    • Summer: 15 June to 15 August, 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM
    • Fall: 1 October to 15 November, 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM
    • Spring: 15 March to 15 May, 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM

STUDENT SERVICE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

Description:
  • Assists with children’s programs and/or birthday parties.   or
  • Assists in the maintenance and restoration shop on Saturday mornings, 8:30 AM until noon.   or
  • Undertakes odd jobs during the summer.
Requirements:
  • Possesses the physical and mental abilities to carry out the assigned tasks.
  • Follows through on commitments.
  • Dresses appropriately for the tasks undertaken.
  • Follows all health and safety rules.
  • Arranges for transportation to and from the Museum at appropriate times.
Volunteer Times:
  • Times will be arranged depending upon the tasks undertaken.

DOCENT

Description:
  • Welcomes visitors to the Museum.
  • Assists visitors in interpreting Museum exhibits.
  • Conducts tours of cars on display.
  • Manages the auditorium for media presentations.
  • Provides visitors directions to the Museum facilities.
Requirements:
  • Enjoys interacting with people.
  • Attends Docent training classes.
  • Dresses in the required attire [white shirt/blouse and navy blue or black pants/skirt].
  • Possesses the physical and mental abilities necessary to carry out the job description.
  • Follows all health and safety regulations.
Volunteer Times:
  • On the days, and during the hours, the Museum is open according to pre-arranged schedule.   Operating hours

CONDUCTOR

Description:
  • Accepts responsibility for the safety, comfort, and convenience of passengers during streetcar operations.
  • Instructs the passengers and validates fares during the pause in the trip.
  • Assists the motorman in the operation of the streetcar.
Requirements:
  • Possesses the physical and mental abilities to properly carry out the responsibilities of the job.
  • Serves successfully as a Docent for a minimum of twenty-five hours.
  • Successfully completes all training sessions.
  • Passes the Conductor’s written exam on the Manual of Operating Rules.
  • Dresses in the regulation uniform.
  • Follow all health and safety regulations.
Volunteer Times:
  • On the days, and during the hours, the Museum is open according to pre-arranged schedule.   Operating hours

MOTORMAN/OPERATOR

Motorman in DCT 1101 Description:
  • Operates streetcars safely and in accord with protocols.
  • Acts as Conductor when operating alone.
Requirements:
  • Is at least 18 years old and has the physical and mental abilities to carry out the responsibilities of the job.
  • Has served as Conductor for twenty-five hours.
  • Completes all training sessions successfully.
  • Passes Conductor's / Operator's written exam on the Manual of Operating Rules.
  • Dresses in the regulation uniform.
  • Accepts responsibility for the safety of passengers and equipment while operating the streetcar.
  • Follows all health and safety regulations.
  • Operates the cars in revenue service at least once in two months.
Volunteer Times:
  • On the days, and during the hours, the Museum is open according to pre-arranged schedule.   Operating hours

MAINTENANCE MOTORMAN

Motorman on Tamper Description:
  • Operates the cars for maintenance purposes.
Requirements:
  • Is at least 18 years old and has the physical and mental abilities to carry out the responsibilities of the job.
  • Follows all health and safety regulations.
  • Demonstrates precision in operating streetcars.
  • Understands the mechanics of streetcar operation.
  • Successfully completes all training sessions.
  • Passes written exams on the Manual of Operating Rules.
  • Passes an oral exam on the technical aspects of streetcarcar operations.
Volunteer Times:
  • Tuesdays and/or Saturdays, 8:30 AM until noon.

MAINTENANCE AND RESTORATION CREW


 
Description:
  • Assists in the maintenance and restoration of the Museum’s streetcar collection, the Museum’s structures and the Museum’s other operating equipment.
Requirements:
  • Possesses the desire and ability to undertake “on the job training” to carry out the necessary maintenance and restoration tasks.
  • Wears appropriate work clothing.
  • Follows all health and safety regulations.
Volunteer Times:
  • Tuesdays and/or Saturdays, 8:30 AM until noon.

TRACK MAINTENANCE CREW

Track Repair Description:
  • Maintain and repair the Museum’s demonstration railroad.
Requirements:
  • Follows all health and safety regulations.
  • Possesses the physical ability to do the heavy work involved.
  • Wears appropriate work clothing.
Volunteer Times:
  • Usually Sunday mornings, but only intermittently as needed.
