Honoring the Transit Workers Who Keep Our Communities Moving

This Labor Day, the National Capital Trolley Museum recognizes the thousands of men and women whose hard work keeps our transit systems moving every day. From operators and mechanics to maintenance crews, dispatchers, engineers, supervisors, and countless others, transit workers play a vital role in connecting our communities.

The photograph featured here captures DC Transit employees in the late 1950s or early 1960s, during an important era of change in Washington’s transportation history. We are especially grateful that Barbara Hubshman, daughter of O. Roy Chalk, donated this historic photograph to the Museum, where it is now preserved in the Mills Dean Library and Archives.

On Labor Day, we thank everyone who has dedicated their career to public transportation and the essential work of keeping our communities connected. Happy Labor Day!
