Volunteer Spotlight: Jeff Pierpoint

For Jeff Pierpoint, trains and transit have been part of life for as long as he can remember.

Jeff grew up next to the W&OD Railroad in Falls Church and later rode DC Transit buses and trolleys to Senators games at Griffith Stadium and to Glen Echo Park. He even remembers his aunt taking him and his sister for one last trolley ride as Washington’s streetcar era came to an end.

That connection to transit eventually became his career. In 1980, Jeff joined WMATA as a mechanic at the Brentwood Yard. Over the next 20 years, he worked in several roles, including maintenance supervisor and Quality Assurance Inspector, and helped write the original maintenance procedures for Metro’s 2000-series cars.

Today, Jeff brings that lifetime of experience to the National Capital Trolley Museum. He began as a Maintenance & Restoration volunteer, later became maintenance supervisor, and now serves as co-leader of the Maintenance & Restoration Team and a member of the museum’s Board of Trustees.

For Jeff, volunteering has also become an important part of retirement:
